 Evangelism Messages
Sharing Christ - These weekly messages are brought to you by the Evangelism Committee of St. James Episcopal Church and School.
Sunday, 29 May 2011
There are three roles involved in evangelism: the non-believer, the believer, and God.

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commanded “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Dr. R. Larry Moyer, a veteran evangelist and a frequent speaker, describes the three roles in an article at http://ht.ly/4Abvr . He ends the article with this challenge: Can you think of anything more exciting than being a partner with Jesus Christ in populating heaven? He wants to use you. The question is, “Are you willing to be used?” He’s ready if you are.

Several years ago at a service for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities at our former church, we were visited by a handbell choir, the Joybells. All of the members of the choir have developmental disabilities. As the choir members were bringing in their instruments, tables, and other equipment, I was greeting them. One of the Joybells, Billy, briefly conversed with me as I welcomed him. The Joybells made a joyful noise unto the Lord during the service. After the service, I heard my name being called out; it was Billy getting ready to go to their bus. So I went to Billy; he gave me a hug, and said “I’m going to miss you.” Billy was a wonderful evangelist as he shared Christ’s love.

We’re all greeters in a way. Here is an abbreviated version of a Newcomer’s Wish List; the full article may be viewed at the Greeters page of the church website at www.saintjamesonline.org/greeters.

You cannot know the reason why I am here this morning. It may be as simple as a move to your community or as complicated as a personal crisis that leads me to seek strength from God. In either case, I am here. And I will remain here and come back to worship with you next Sunday and the Sunday after that, and the Sunday after that . . . if you will do some things for me. Won’t you please...
  • Smile at me during coffee hour…
  • Tell me good things about your church and your minister…
  • Notice me even if I am not a “family.” …
  • Talk to me again the second week when I come back, and the third and the fourth…
  • Invite me to become a part of some church group or organization…
If you can find it in your heart do these things for me, I will come back . . . the second Sunday, the third, and maybe forever. I will worship with you, and I may join your choir, work at your fair, teach in your church school, contribute to your canvass, and become a highly involved member of your church, and in doing so, I will find my own life immeasurably enriched.

Abbreviated from an article contributed by The Rev. Christopher Moore, Holy Comforter Church in Drexel Hill, PA; as adapted by Andrew Weeks, The Magnetic Church.

Share Christ’s love

In Matthew 22:39, Jesus commanded “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
We believe our neighbor to be all people, whether within the walls of our church building or in our town or anyplace in the world.
In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commanded “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

So let’s proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ as we do our best to share Christ’s love with our neighbor, knowing that Christ is with us.

Evangelism – a big word that can have an uncomplicated meaning. When we evangelize, we are sharing Christ’s love with another person. It is a joy to see some of the evangelism that goes on at St. James. A sight that is a joy to me is the grandmother who has been bringing her grandson to St. James. He seems to blossom with the opportunities at St. James that his grandmother has made available to him. She is sharing Christ’s love and my guess is that he will share Christ’s love with another in the future.
