Sharing Christ - These weekly messages are brought to you by the Evangelism Committee of St. James Episcopal Church and School.

"Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves."
  - James M. Barrie (the author of Peter Pan)
When you visit the shut-in, the sick, the elderly, the lonely, you are sharing Christ.

Pray for opportunities to share the Good News
Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving. At the same time pray for us as well that God will open to us a door for the word, that we may declare the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison, so that I may reveal it clearly, as I should.  Conduct yourselves wisely towards outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone.
  —Colossians 4:2-6

First, pray for open doors, asking that God will give us opportunities to share our faith.
Second, pray that we’ll recognize and capitalize on each opportunity.
Third, pray that the Spirit will give us clarity of mind and speech when we do tell someone about Jesus.
Fourth, pray for sensitivity in our language. As followers of Jesus we need to tell the gospel story in a way that connects with people on a personal level.

Books as evangelism tools
Last month I read two books by Betty Martin – “A Miracle at Carville” and “No one must ever know”. I thought I would be reading about the trials and tribulation she and her husband went through dealing with Hanson’s Disease (AKA leprosy), but little did I know that the evangelism message I will always remember was the faith in Jesus shared by Betty and her husband, Harry, that helped them to endure what was a dreaded disease. Another strong Christian message that I received from the books is one that is frequently shared by Father Fred; i.e. it’s all about relationships!

If you read a good book containing an evangelism message, lend it to someone with whom you’d like to share Christ, discuss it, and “voila!” – you have evangelized.

“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.”
                   —I Peter 3:15b-16 (NIV)

The Great Commission
Shortly before He ascended into heaven, Jesus commanded his apostles:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
—Mathew 28:19-20
Think of ways that you can fulfill this. Each of us in our daily life should try to keep this in mind; and it’s comforting to know that we are not alone.
